Winter spiced drinks to warm a Pune December

Ginger, cardamom, turmeric and cinnamon — the spices that make cool Pune evenings cosy.

Masala chai with whole spices on a café table

December mornings in Pune can dip surprisingly low, and that's when spiced drinks shine. Indian kitchens have long used warming spices in winter — here are our favourites to sip at the café or brew at home.

1. Masala chai

Assam leaf simmered with fresh ginger, cardamom and tulsi. Ask for oat milk to make it fully plant-based.

2. Turmeric golden latte

Turmeric, black pepper and cinnamon in almond milk — caffeine-free and perfect after dinner.

3. Spiced filter kaapi

Our South Indian decoction with a pinch of cardamom and nutmeg, frothed the traditional way.

4. Jaggery cold brew with cinnamon

Prefer it cold even in winter? Organic jaggery and a cinnamon stick add warmth without heat.

Brew it at home

Crush spices just before brewing, simmer gently rather than boiling hard, and sweeten with jaggery or dates instead of refined sugar.
