Oat milk coffee: taste, frothing and ingredient checks
Why oat milk is a favourite dairy-free choice, and how to get a good cup from it.
Oat milk is made by blending oats with water and straining. Its natural creaminess and mild sweetness make it one of the easiest plant milks to pair with coffee.
How it tastes
Oat milk is gently sweet and cereal-like. It softens bright, acidic coffees and sits well with chocolatey or nutty beans.
Frothing tips
- Choose a "barista" style carton — these are made to foam and resist splitting.
- Start cold, straight from the fridge.
- Heat until warm, not boiling; overheated oat milk loses its foam and can taste cooked.
- If it splits in very acidic coffee, let the coffee cool slightly or pour the milk in first.
What to check on the label
- Added sugar: look for "unsweetened" if you want less.
- Added oil: often included for creaminess — normal, but worth knowing.
- Fortification: some add calcium and vitamins; dairy milk's nutrients aren't automatic.
- Gluten: oats can be cross-contaminated — choose certified gluten-free if you need it.
